Segmented Key Input
Auto-formatting segmented license key entry with magnetic cursor states.
Context
License key fields are where product polish goes to die: a single ugly input, users squinting at dashes, paste failures, and silent validation errors. I rebuilt the pattern from scratch as a segmented, auto-formatting input.
The interesting part
The field is one real input element visually sliced into chunks, not a row of separate inputs. One input means native paste, drag, autocomplete, and mobile keyboard behavior all work for free. Chunk boundaries are rendered on top, and auto-advance fires when a chunk fills. Pasting a raw key anywhere normalizes and distributes characters across chunks.
Show it
A detail
The caret never jumps: chunk transitions animate the fill state of the departing chunk before focus moves, so the eye can follow. Validation is tactile, not textual. Chunks confirm one by one instead of one error banner at the end.
What I learned
One hidden native input beats five fake ones. Keep the platform behavior, redesign the surface on top of it.
